Green Heart Biennale

The Green Heart Biennale is a new international and simultaneously local and regional festival for art, design, and ecological regeneration focused on the Green Heart region in The Netherlands. The Green Heart Biennial builds on innovative ideas and practices from regenerative art and design, as well as citizen-led initiatives for ecological regeneration: creative interventions that contribute to the restoration, revitalisation, and favourable development of local ecological conditions for all forms of life.

The festival will have its inaugural edition in the spring of 2026. The aim is to organise the festival biannually in the region thereafter. This first edition will consist of local thematic public programs that we will organise on four consecutive weekends between May 30 to June 21, at different locations in the Green Heart: Nieuwkoop and the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, Boskoop, Gouda, and Gorinchem.

These programs are linked to four “seedling projects,” which we will develop with international artists and local cultural organisations and initiatives, that actively involve the local population.

Throughout the festival period (May 30th to June 21st), a central exhibition is set up in Gouda at GOUDasfalt, the extensive bottom-up cultural incubator on the Hollandse IJssel River, directly across from the city’s historic centre. The exhibition will bring together local projects and themes with international eco-regenerative art and design projects.

The public programs consist of presentations by artists, designers, researchers, ecological initiatives, small-scale exhibitions, practical workshops, educational programs and explorations of the environment.
